A LITTLE HISTORY OF THE
BULOVA WATCH COMPANY
|
When studding the history of American Watch Companies, the American firm of
Bulova stands out as a leader and innovator. In 1875, Joseph Bulova, a
23-year-old Czech immigrant, founded what would soon become the Bulova Watch
Company. An icon of innovation and imagination, in New York City, thus he
realized the American dream.
The Bulova Watch Company was the first American manufacturer to offer a full
line of wristwatches for men in 1919 after the First World War made it
practical and fashionable for a man to wear a wristwatch. Up to this date,
it was considered effeminate to wear such a timepiece, but the masculine men
of the military along with aviators and explorers set the standards and
Bulova fully capitalized on the trend!
Their decisiveness, willingness to take risk and quick actions quickly
advanced Bulova past their competition from American firms like Hamilton,
Waltham and Illinois. The pulse of the country was American and the Bulova
Company grew.
The Bulova Breakthrough:
The development of the Accutron began in 1952. The technology of the
Accutron promised to be the first substantial breakthrough in horology in
hundreds of years, and it was an overwhelming success. Accutron watches like
the space view and the astronaut are amongst the most coveted American
watches of the period, a must have in every watch enthusiast collection.
You will find that Accutron watches are able to keep time extremely accurate,
within 2 seconds a day. Travel a little further in time and watch technology
makes a quantum leap. Accuracy is now measured in thousands of a second, not
seconds per day. The word is Solid State and Bulova, again, is leading the
pack with their fabulous right angle / TV direct read watch.
THE ACCUTRON…
Everyone knows that Omega Speedmaster moon watch Chronographs were worn by
the pilots of the some Apollo missions, but few realize that Bulova was
there also.
As the space race of the sixties raged on, on mother earth, Bulova had been
asked to have their extremely accurate tuning fork movements in the heavens.
Literally.
In 1960, NASA asked the Bulova watch company to incorporate the Bulova
Accutron into its simulator and flight computers for the space program. For
the next ten years, these Bulova Accutron movements become an integral part
of the success of 46 missions of the U.S. Space Program.
One of the items the crew of Apollo 11 left behind on the moon was a vital
piece of equipment designed to broadcast information periodically through
the following years. Placed within the Sea of Tranquility is this piece of
equipment, within which is the Bulova Accutron movement responsible for the
precise timing of data transmissions.
President Johnson even declared the Bulova Accutron the White Houses
official Gift of State. And in 1967, Accutron watches are the only clocks
aboard Air Force One.
